Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences’ primary regions of operation are Lapland and the Barents region. In part of RAMK’s educational work the area of operation extends beyond provincial responsibility. Provincial development rests on the development of strong new industrial sectors. Growth of the mining industry, in particular, creates the prerequisites for the development of other sectors. The tourism business has been developing positively for several years, and the trend is expected to continue. The population of the province has been shrinking, but this decline is expected to level off and turn to growth, especially in population centres. Young age groups are expected to begin growing as business picks up. The development plans of the province rely heavily on the region’s natural strengths. The region’s higher education institutions support this development through education, research and innovation.
Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences, Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences and the University of Lapland agreed in 2008 to establish the Lapland Higher Education Consortium. Within the consortium they agreed on a division of work and that each institution would assume responsibility for provincial education in its own strong areas of expertise. For its part the consortium’s innovation programme steers the research, development and innovation activities of the provinces’ higher education institutions.
Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences’ strategy supports achievement of the strategic goals of the Lapland Higher Education Consortium. RAMK’s strategy also takes into account the Rovaniemi Municipal Federation of Education’s strategy targeting the year 2020.
