Outdoor activities

Snowmobiling, reindeer- and husky safaris are arranged by several safari companies operating in Rovaniemi. For example Arctic Safaris offers a three hours snowmobile safari to a husky farm for 101€/person. In Eräsetti Safaris you get a 2, 5 hours reindeer safari for 83€/person.

Hiking: You can find marked hiking routes and as long as you have necessary equipment and skills it is a safe and nice way to explore the unique nature of Lapland.

Cycling: Cycling routes can be found all around the town and premises. You can also use them for jogging, rollerblading etc.

Huts along the river: for free, with fire places, where you can go to fry sausages. Remember to keep them tidy and put out the fire before leaving!

Summer swimming: You can take sun and swim in the Ounasjoki -river. There is a small beach next to Jätkänkynttilä –bridge.

Ounasvaara: Ounasvaara ski resort offers downhill and cross-country skiing, winter tobogganing or snowshoeing in the winter and hiking, summer bobsleighing and golf in the summer.

Auttinköngäs: Auttinköngäs is a conservation area with a river canyon and waterfall formed millions of years ago. The region has walking routes and trails and is located approximately an hour’s drive from Rovaniemi in the direction of Kuusamo.

Gyms: Jiipee, Nautilus, Kunnon paikka. The schools of Technology, Sports & Leisure and Hotel & Restaurant also offer gym facilities for the students for free. Jiipee for example offers monthly card for student price of 39€/ month. It includes the gym, aerobics, sauna, solarium and spinning. All private gyms require at least three months contract for discount cards.

Swimming pools: available in Nautilus, Vesihiisi, Hotel & Restaurant school, Santasport Center. Price in Vesihiisi 3,40€ / student. Santasport Center is a very modern, quiet and relaxed place with excellent "savusauna" (traditional Finnish sauna, something that must be experienced!) every Sunday and Monday. Swimming pool is open all week and price for students is 4 €.

Sport centres: There are several big sport centres (Kunnon paikka, Santasport Center, Ounashalli, Lapin liikuntakeskus). They offer for example squash, tennis, wall climbing, indoor bandy, space, badminton, volleyball etc.

Santa Claus Village is situated 8km away from the city centre and is reachable by bus number 5 leaving every hour from the train station.  The bus ride will cost you €5 two-way. In the village you can meet the one and only Santa Claus in his office, have an official photo with him (€18), send cards from the Santa’s post office and get a certificate for crossing the Arctic Circle with your own feet. The entrance to the village is free. There are many souvenir shops and cafes. It is a nice place to spend your day and an authentic experience. 

Santapark: Theme park located in the Arctic Circle. Entrance fee is 20€ / person. But this is more of a place for children.

Cultural activities

Arktikum is a science centre, museum, unique architectural sight and a meeting and conference centre. The exhibitions present the Lappish wilderness and cultural heritage and interaction between man and nature in the northern areas. It’s really worth of visit, probably the best place to find all kinds of interesting information about Lappism and Norhern environments. Student price per ticket is €8,50.

Rovaniemi Art Museum presents modern art exhibitions. The student ticket is €2.

Marttiinin Puukkotehdas Oy is a headquaters of the world famous knives producer Marttiini. You can buy knives much cheaper in the shop of the factory and in the next room there is a small exhibition telling about the history of the company. It is free for any visitors.

Rovaniemi Theatre (Rovaniemen Teatteri Lappia-talo) you can watch various plays and performances. The student tickets prices vary from €7-10.

Rovaniemi Cinema is located in the heart of the city. It’s modern but rather small. Price for students is 7 € per movie. There is also movie club that shows more independent art movies if you’re interested.
